KALOGRIDIS, Jeanne : The Scarlet Contessa GRIFFIN 9780312576240

Just as Philippa Gregory did for Tudor England, Jeanne Kalogridis does for Renaissance Italy. Her latest compelling historical novel tells the story of a countess whose passion and willpower knew no bounds—Caterina Sforza. Daughter of the Duke of Milan and wife of Count Girolamo Riario, Caterina Sforza was the bravest warrior Renaissance Italy had ever known. She ruled her own lands, led her own battles, and openly took lovers whenever she pleased. Her remarkable tale is recounted by her lady-in-waiting, Dea, a woman skilled in reading "triumph cards"—the precursors to modern tarot cards. While Dea attempts to unravel the truth behind her husband's murder, Caterina single-handedly holds off the invaders who seek to steal her title and lands. Yet, Dea’s card readings reveal that Caterina cannot withstand a third and final invader: none other than Cesare Borgia, son of the corrupt Pope Alexander VI, who has an old score to settle with her. Trapped inside the fortress of Ravaldino as Borgia’s cannons batter the walls, Dea reflects on Caterina’s scandalous past and struggles to comprehend their shared destiny, all while Caterina valiantly battles Borgia’s seemingly invincible army.
